The most simple style of car port is simply a roof and a couple of posts to keep it in place, without any kind of sides involved. This offers shelter against the rain but still allows access through to the rear of the house.
From there, you can add as much detail as you want. You can add solid or trellis style panels at one side, the side and the back or even a mixture. These can go all the way up to the roof nearly or have a combination of solid and trellis areas to create an ornate look.
